Calories Burned Per Hour of Kayaking

Biking and running are popular choices to burn calories, but if you don't enjoy these sports don't be afraid to try other outdoor sports, such as kayaking, to burn calories while you have fun. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, enjoyable activities promote exercise adherence and subsequent weight loss.

    Calories Per Hour

According to the American Council on Exercise, a 125-lb. person burns 283 calories per hour of kayaking while a 150-lb. person burns 340, a 175-lb. person burns 397 calories and a 200-lb. person burns 454 calories. Higher body weight requires increased energy expenditure for activity.

Calories per Pound of Body Fat

One pound of body fat equals 3,500 calories. Therefore, a 175-lb. person burns the equivalent of 1 lb. of body fat after accumulating approximately 8 hours and 45 minutes of kayaking over time.

    Comparison to Other Activities

Kayaking burns more calories per hour than cycling 5.5 mph, less than running 5.5 mph and the same as playing softball for one hour. A 125-lb. person burns 454 calories running 5.5 mph for one hour, 227 calories per hour of 5.5-mph cycling and 283 calories per hour of softball.
