    If you're a regular watcher of daytime television, you may be familiar with Dr. Mehmet Oz, a renowned cardiothoracic surgeon. Oz encourages healthy eating, specifically citing the benefits of certain "superfoods." According to The Dr. Oz Show, superfoods are extremely high in nutritional value and/or possess chemical properties that are thought to ward off disease. Oz's superfoods list contains a wide range of food choices that can fit into any diet.

    Sweet Potatoes

    Sweet potatoes are high in fiber and have a lower glycemic index value than regular white potatoes, which helps to slow the breakdown of glucose in your bloodstream. According to The Dr. Oz Show, one type of sweet potato called imo is particularly rich in beta carotenes and antioxidants.

    Mustard Greens

    Green leafy vegetables such as mustard greens are an excellent source of fiber and calcium. According to The Dr. Oz Show, mustard greens are also high in Vitamin K, which is believed to contribute to improved bone health and a decreased risk for developing blood clots.

    Tomatoes

    Tomatoes are an important source of fiber, beta carotene and vitamin C. They are also an excellent source of lycopene, particularly when cooked. According to Dr. Oz, research suggests that tomatoes can potentially reduce your risk of developing prostate, breast, lung and colon cancer.

    Berries

    Berries are rich in fiber and vitamin C, and they also contain high levels of antioxidants. The Dr. Oz Show specifically recommends eating blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, acai berries and gogi berries. These and other types of berries contain important phytochemicals that are believed to destroy cancer cells in the liver.

    Eggs

    Eggs are rich in protein and low in calories. According to Dr. Oz, eggs are also an excellent source of iron, biotin and B12, which can combat anemia and reduce hair loss. Pregnant women should be aware that eggs are also high in choline, which is particularly important for fetal brain development.

    Turmeric

    Turmeric is a yellow spice commonly found in Indian curries. According to The Dr. Oz Show, turmeric is rich in antioxidants and proven to prevent and slow tumor growth. Turmeric can be used in soups, dressings, main dishes or tea. The Dr. Oz Show recommends consulting your physician before adding turmeric to your diet if you are currently being treated for cancer.

    Red Wine

    Red wine is rich in antioxidants and contains high levels of resveratrol, a plant phytoalexin. Red wine offers benefits in terms of improving heart health and reducing your risk for certain types of cancer. According to The Dr. Oz Show, resveratrol is linked to a decreased risk for breast and prostate cancer in particular.

    Mangosteen

    Mangosteen is a tropical fruit from Indonesia. According to The Dr. Oz Show, mangosteen is high in vitamins A and C, and it's also an excellent source of antioxidants. If you can't find mangosteen in fruit form locally, mangosteen juice and tea are both widely available.
