Ideas for Songs for Pre-Teens to Perform in a Talent Show

Many preteens are preoccupied with their social alliances and desire to make a good impression on their peers during social events such as talent shows. Fast, uptempo songs are more likely to get audiences out of their seats, while ballads give performers an opportunity to showcase their vocal skills. Singing popular songs that the audience is familiar with increases the chances of engaging the crowd.

    Pop Songs

Pop music is a hit for children of all ages. Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is an upbeat selection that will have youngsters singing along until the end of the performance. "As Long As You Love Me" by Justin Bieber is another popular music option with vocals that are mildly challenging. Demi Lovato's "Give Your Heart a Break" will be a hit, while Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" gives singers the opportunity to be really creative onstage.

    Rock 'n' Roll

Rock 'n' roll allows a singer to put lots of creative spunk into a stage performance. "Try" by Pink is a passionate ensemble that challenges a singer's ability to sing and keep an audience entertained. Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" is a big hit from the 1980s that will have students and teachers playing air guitar during the performance. Nickelback's "Rockstar" has fun lyrics that can enhance a performance, while Coldplay's "Clocks" allows a singer to bring a mellow yet engaging vibe to the talent show.

    Oldies But Goodies

Some songs have stood the test of time and continue to keep audiences of all ages engaged. "ABC" by the Jackson 5 is an entertaining song that will have an audience singing and dancing. R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly" might be reserved for a school's graduating class, but if not, it's definitely viable. "Hey Ya!" by Outkast, while not an oldie like some of the other selections, is a goodie that often charms audiences.

    Movie and TV Theme Songs

Songs from popular movies and TV shows are also worthwhile musical options for talent show performances. The full version of "Exceptional" by China McClain, from Disney's TV show "Ant Farm," is an uptempo selection that will inspire and motivate an audience. "A Whole New World" from Disney's "Aladdin," is another classic tune that most will enjoy. Hit songs from the "High School Musical" trilogy, such as "All For One" or "We're All In This Together," are additional suggestions that can make a talent show performance a success.
