How to Stretch Out the Elastic Waist on Tights

Tights are a timeless addition to both casual and more formal styles; they allow for added warmth while streamlining a look. Tights are well fitted in order to avoid bulk underneath clothing. As sizing varies between brands, some tights may fit well in the leg while being a bit too snug at the waist. The elastic waist on a pair of tights can be stretched out at home to create a more comfortable fit.

Step 1
Place the tights in a bucket.
Step 2
Fill the bucket with cold water, covering the tights completely.
Step 3
Allow the tights to soak for 30 minutes.
Step 4
Remove the tights from the water and gently ring them out.
Step 5
Stuff an old T-shirt into the waist of the tights.
Step 6
Add another T-shirt and some socks if necessary in order to stretch the waist to the maximum the tights will allow; however, avoid over-stuffing, as this may cause runs in the fabric.
Step 7
Hang the tights to dry over top of a clothesline or railing.
Step 8
Allow the tights to air dry and set for six hours in order to permanently stretch them.
Step 9
Remove the stuffing from the tights.
