What Are the Dangers of Noxzema?
Noxzema is a popular over-the-counter skin cleanser. Noxzema products exist in many forms, from creams and lotions to soaps and cleansing pads. While the product is generally safe, all treatments carry some risks. Consumers should be aware of the dangers of Noxzema so they recognize symptoms immediately. If you encounter these problems, always seek the advise of a physician.

Noxzema products contain salicylic acid, a chemical ingredient commonly found in products that treat acne. While it may be effective, it is not without some notable side effects that could be as problematic as the skin condition itself. Various forms of skin irritation may surface after use of salicylic acid. These include a burning or stinging sensation directly on the skin where the salicylic acid was applied. Salicylic acid dries out the skin, and this can cause scaly and peeling skin in sensitive individuals. Redness and itching may accompany these symptoms.
Allergic Reactions
It is possible that you may have a severe allergic reaction to salicylic acid. Allergies range in intensity, but severe allergic reactions can be life-threatening. One of the most common signs of an allergic reaction is the presence of a rash or hives. Always get to a doctor right away with the rapid onset of any rash. But some symptoms are not easily visible. If you are unable to breathe or feel pain or a tightening in your chest, seek medical attention immediately. Allergic reactions may also cause swelling in the face or even in the mouth. All of these symptoms are serious dangers that salicylic acid may cause, and thus Noxzema consumers must be cognizant of their warning signs.
Toxic Ingredients
According to the wellness resource website Bliss Plan, Noxzema contains four ingredients that may be toxic to the body. The product contains stearic acid, which, among other things, is also used in the production of plastic. It is combined with triethanolamine which can irritate the eyes and cause problems with the body's endocrine system. Noxzema also contains a carcinogen: ammonium hydroxide. According to the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, carcinogens may cause cancer. Propylene glycol is another toxic ingredient in Noxzema. This chemical is also used in vehicles to maintain brakes and hydraulics and is listed as an irritant in Material Safety Data Sheets. Some degree of toxicity is present in many skin products and may not necessarily lead to serious health problems. Nonetheless, these are potential dangers of Noxzema.
